Forty-Four

T he conference room featured a blonde wood oblong table that seated ten. A small window looked onto the park across the street and the glass wall opposite would normally view into the office with a dozen cubicles and staff in civilian clothes although today the drapes had been pulled. The chairs around the conference table had a padded, brown faux leather seat and back. A black plastic tray sat in the middle of the table holding a half dozen plastic bottles of water.

“How do you want to handle this?” Maxwell said, once they were seated around the table. Maxwell had just received the call from the entry security that Noel Taylor had arrived and was in the process of being escorted up to the third floor.

“I think,” Dillon said looking over at Suel. “I’d like you to begin, don’t introduce us. See if he’ll verbally agree to his statement, give him the opportunity to make any changes and once he agrees to the statement as it exists, we’ll enter the discussion. Point out the discrepancies, hopefully, that will motivate him. If that doesn’t encourage him, we can run the Empire Pub tape and then I’ll speak as an officer from the United States. How long will it take to get information from his phone?”

“No more than a minute or two. They’ll have it by the time he steps off the elevator up here,” Maxwell said.

“I almost feel sorry for the lads,” Suel said just as there was a knock on the door.

“Enter,” Maxwell called as the door opened and a woman in uniform held the door open. She wore a short sleeve white blouse with two flapped pockets, a black tie and skirt. One of the pockets had a black name tag attached. Her brown hair was cut short and her jaw was set. She didn’t look like the sort of woman you’d give a hard time to. As soon as the young man entered she pulled the door closed behind him. Taylor half turned at the sound of the door closing then looked around at the three grim faced men seated at the conference table.

“Umm, hi,” he said and gave a half wave.

Maxwell made a show of studying one of the sheets of paper resting on the closed laptop just in front of him for a few seconds. “Mr. Taylor, thank you for coming, please take a seat,” he said and extended his hand toward a seat directly across from Dillon and Suel.

Noel Taylor looked like an average college kid. He wore a blue pin stripped shirt with a button down collar and jeans that appeared to be clean. The shirt was untucked as was the style. His dark hair was neatly trimmed along the sides and slicked in a short spike on top. He appeared to be in very good physical condition, no doubt from playing rugby. Once seated, he swallowed nervously a couple of times.

Maxwell smiled, turned on a recorder, stated the date and time and listed everyone in the room.
